Celebrate MLK Day: The community gives back in Honor of Martin Luther King Day Weekend


Martin Luther King Day is on Monday, January 17th, and you can guarantee that this holiday will be celebrated all weekend especially in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is one of the staples of the Civil Rights Movement led by Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. In honor of his legacy and righteous fight for freedom, there are many celebratory events that will take place this weekend.


The National Center for Civil and Human Rights will kick off the celebration on Saturday , January 15th which would be Kings 92nd birthday. The center welcomes all guest on Saturday from 11 a.m-4 p.m and on Monday from 12 p.m-3 p.m. for both virtual and in-person activities. Both days include interactive storytelling, spoken word, and discussions amongst visual artists. All activities are included with general admission for the museum. Georgia State University is having their annual day of service to commemorate Dr.King. Those who are interested can participate by volunteering at the Atlanta Zoo, the campus botanical garden, Bethel Saturday Youth Academy, and several different events hosted by GSU's Student Civic Engagement team. Shifts can start as early as 8 a.m and end at 1 p.m. If you are interested in being apart of this project, register on the GSU website in the link below.

As you know, Dr.King was a firm believer in pouring into the community. This year the AKA sorority has took initiative to provide women with free mobile mammogram testing. This is available to women without health insurance that are 40 years old and up. Mobile mammogram testing will be held at the Saint Phillip A.M.E church this Saturday and upcoming Monday from 8 a.m-5 p.m. For more information on this event, visit the link below.




Martin Luther King planted the seed for us to have the freedom that we do today, his strength and courage should always be celebrated.
