ISSA Vibe

In honor of the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Annual award show, this week’s playlist will feature many songs by black women that celebrate womanhood, our unique features, and our journey to loving ourselves. Since 2006, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! has not only served as a platform to honor black women, but a safe space for us to embrace one another and bask in our glory. This year’s show was nothing short of amazing with performances by Ari Lennox, Erykah Badu, Common, India Arie, Kiana Lede, Elle Varner and Monica, just to name a few. These artists have given us songs that make up the soundtrack of our lives as black women.

I selected songs that empower and share the common struggles we as black women share on a day to day basis. From learning to love our kinky curls, curvaceous bodies, and many shades of melanin, to knowing our power as black women, the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! playlist is all about empowerment. The playlist features many interludes from Solange’s albums A Seat At the Table and When I Get Home. Although I wanted the playlist to convey a message of strength and resilience, I also didn’t want it to feel too heavy as many of our celebrations can, due to our dark history. Transitions like Brown Skin Girls by Beyonce, into My Skin my Logo by Solange and Gucci Mane, or Shea Butter Baby by Ari Lennox followed by Brown Sugar by D’Angelo give you a sneak peak into the vibe of my BLACK GIRLS ROCK! playlist. Let this playlist send you into your work week feeling confident and proud to be a black woman.

Black Girls Rock! The Playlist can be found on Tidal and Apple Music.
