Music has always been a love of mine. I can remember the feeling I got watching videos on BET, VH1, and MTV as a child, and asking for countless CD’s every year for Christmas. Perhaps my favorite memory of all is my mom gifting me a 5CD changer one Christmas. I was about ten years old when I received my 5 CD changer stereo and it amplified my love for my music. I was so excited to receive this stereo that allowed me to not only listen to the radio everyday but, I could have 5 of my CDs in rotation. From that the day on I listened to my favorite CDs everyday ( Aaliyah, Monica, Brandy, Mariah Carey, Bow WOW, Destiny’s Child etc.) , and at night enjoyed the soothing sounds of “The Quiet Storm” on the radio.
Each night I would turn off all of my lights and set the radio station on 107.5 WBLS to listen to the endless playlist of R&B and Soul music. Yes, even as a child I could appreciate the mature sounds of classic R&B and Soul. I may not have understood the lyrics to many of the songs but the soulful sounds would relax me as I fell asleep each night. Still today as a young adult, I fall asleep to the sounds of smooth R&B and classic soul. I know many music lovers can relate to listening to The Quiet Storm as a child, or R&B to bring peace and relaxation to their day.
“The Quiet Storm” playlist was created out of pure nostalgia and is an ode to my childhood. As a true music lover I have to acknowledge the root of my love for music which began with smooth R&B. As I thought of songs to add to this playlist, I immediately thought back to cleaning the house on Saturday mornings as my mom played her music which consisted mainly of R&B music. This is a tradition I carry with me today, I mean cleaning just isn’t the same without good R&B music. Each song instantly takes me back to a special memory and feeling from my childhood. I included over eight hours of songs that I hope will take each listener down a path of nostalgia as “The Quiet Storm” playlist does for me.
